Working out at 70 percent to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate will deliver the greatest EPOC effect and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the best ways to get your heart beating. HIIT alternates between short, intense anaerobic exercises, such as sprints, with less-intense recovery periods. A 2:1 work-to-rest ratio has been found to create the best results, with workouts of only 30 minutes.

After a HIIT workout your body rests, but continues to work (burn calories) to clear away the lactic acid and pay back its oxygen debt.
